Searching for the best perfumes for men usually ends with a list of €300 niche bottles or a shop shelf of boxes that all promise to be “fresh” and “intense”. Neither helps much when you have a student budget and want to smell good at a lecture, on a first date or at your cousin’s wedding.
So we kept it practical. Below are ten of the best perfumes for men that are easy to find in Dutch shops, split by budget. Each pick gets a typical euro price, what it smells like, who it suits and one honest downside. Five cost less than €50. Our quick pick is Montblanc Legend for under €50, or Bleu de Chanel if you can spend around €100.

How we picked the best perfumes for men
Our rules for this list:
- Easy to buy in the Netherlands. Every bottle is sold by at least one big Dutch retailer.
- A spread of styles. The picks cover all six VYTA scent families, from aquatic to dark and woody.
- Wearable at 18 to 30. Nothing that needs a three-piece suit to make sense.
- Honest trade-offs. If a scent fades fast or copies a famous bottle, we say so.
We checked notes on retailer pages and on Fragrantica, the largest community fragrance database. Longevity estimates combine retailer descriptions with wearer reports, so treat them as a guide rather than lab results. Prices were checked in November 2026 and may vary. New to fragrance? Best affordable perfumes for men (under €50)
You can smell great for the price of two pizzas. The best affordable perfumes for men below either have a long track record or borrow the style of a far pricier bottle. Looking for Nautica Voyage or Cool Water? Those are in our fresh summer fragrances under €50.

1. Antonio Banderas Blue Seduction (€18–28)
Notes: bergamot, melon, mint, blackcurrant, cardamom, aquatic notes, amber and woods.
Blue Seduction smells clean and slightly fruity, like a cold shower followed by a slice of melon. It is the cheapest bottle here and very hard to overdo. Keep it in your gym bag or wear it on a hot day on the bike.
Downside: it is light and fades within a few hours, so treat it as a top-up scent.
2. Lattafa Asad (€24–37)
Notes: black pepper, pineapple, tobacco, coffee, iris, patchouli, vanilla, amber and dry woods.
Asad opens with a peppery kick and settles into warm vanilla and tobacco. Fans often compare it to Dior Sauvage Elixir, which costs several times as much. As an eau de parfum, two or three sprays last well into the evening.
Downside: it is loud and too heavy for a warm lecture hall.
3. Armaf Club de Nuit Intense Man (€30–45)
Notes: lemon, blackcurrant, apple, birch, rose, jasmine, musk, ambergris and patchouli.
This is the famous budget take on Creed Aventus, a bottle that costs well over €200. Club de Nuit Intense starts with sharp lemon and fruit, then turns smoky thanks to the birch, and it lasts for hours. If you like a scent people notice when you walk into a bar, try this one.
Downside: the first ten minutes are harsh and very smoky, so let it settle before you judge it.
4. Afnan 9pm (€35–48)
Notes: a fresh, fruity opening, a sweet and spicy heart and a warm base of vanilla and woods.
As the name suggests, 9pm is built for the evening. It is sweet and a little spicy, in the style of Jean Paul Gaultier’s Ultra Male, which makes it a popular choice for dates and parties.
Downside: too sugary for the office or a summer afternoon.
5. Montblanc Legend Eau de Toilette (from about €45)
Notes: lavender, bergamot, lemon verbena, pineapple, oakmoss, geranium, red apple, sandalwood and tonka bean.
Legend is a modern fougère, the classic barbershop mix of lavender and moss, made friendlier with apple and pineapple. It smells like a freshly ironed shirt. If you need one bottle for lectures, an internship or a job interview, this is a sensible buy. Expect to pay about €45–55 for 100 ml.
Downside: it is popular, so it will not make you stand out.
Mid-range picks (€50 to €100)
Many of the best perfumes for men sit in this price band. These picks offer different balances of citrus, woods and sweetness. A higher price does not guarantee better blending or longer wear.
6. Montblanc Explorer (€55–98)
Notes: bergamot, pink pepper, clary sage, vetiver, leather, patchouli and akigalawood.
Explorer is another Aventus-style scent, but cleaner and more polished than Club de Nuit Intense. Think fresh citrus over earthy vetiver and soft leather. It works at a desk, at dinner and at the weekend, so it is an easy “one bottle for everything” pick. The list price is €98, but it is often on offer for around €60.
Downside: after a few hours it fades to a quiet woody skin scent.
7. Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male (€70–96)
Notes: lavender, mint, cardamom, bergamot, cinnamon, orange blossom, vanilla, tonka bean and sandalwood.
Le Male launched in 1995 and still turns up on almost every list of the best perfumes for men. Fresh lavender and mint sit on top of soft vanilla, a bit like clean laundry and warm skin at once. That mix makes it a strong date-night choice in cold weather. Expect around €80–90 for the 125 ml bottle.
Downside: it was huge in the 2000s, so some people will link it to their dad.
8. Terre d’Hermès Eau de Toilette (€75–93 for 50 ml)
Notes: orange, grapefruit, pepper, pelargonium, vetiver, cedar, patchouli and benzoin.
Created by Jean-Claude Ellena in 2006, Terre smells like bitter orange peel on dry earth and warm stone. It is quiet and grown-up, noticed only by people standing close. Wear it to the office, a presentation or a smart dinner. Prices for the 100 ml bottle vary a lot, so compare before you buy.
Downside: it can feel too grown-up if you mostly like sweet scents.
Worth saving for (around €100)
Two of the most recognisable designer scents for men. Both are well made and work almost anywhere.
9. Dior Sauvage Eau de Toilette (€90–100 for 60 ml)
Notes: Calabrian bergamot, pepper and ambroxan.
Ask around for the best perfumes for men and Sauvage is usually the first name you hear. Juicy bergamot and a peppery, mineral base give it a fresh yet strong feel that suits almost any age and occasion, which also makes it a safe gift. Expect around €95–105 for 60 ml.
Downside: it is everywhere. If you want something nobody else in the room is wearing, look elsewhere.
10. Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum (€78–104 for 50 ml)
Notes: grapefruit and lemon on top, then ginger and pink pepper, settling into incense, cedar and sandalwood.
Bleu de Chanel pairs fresh citrus with a smooth, smoky wood base. Think of it as the quieter cousin of Sauvage. It is hard to dislike, so many men wear it as their signature scent, and it fits a wedding as well as a Tuesday at the office. It is often discounted, so watch for offers.
Downside: the price. Montblanc Explorer covers similar ground for less.

How to buy smart and make it last

Even the best perfumes for men disappoint if you buy blind or apply them badly. A few habits help:
- Test on skin, then wait. Spray a tester on your wrist, walk around and smell it again after an hour, once the top notes have faded.
- Check the concentration. An eau de parfum usually lasts longer than an eau de toilette with the same name. Our guide on eau de parfum vs eau de toilette explains the difference.
- Compare prices. The same bottle can differ by €40 or more between a perfumery and an online discounter, as Terre d’Hermès shows above. Prices often drop around Black Friday.
- Be careful on marketplaces. Fakes tend to turn up in very cheap listings from unknown third-party sellers, so read the seller reviews first.
- Apply after a shower. Spray onto moisturised skin on your neck and chest, and don’t rub your wrists together. More tips in our guide to making perfume last longer.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular perfume for men?
Dior Sauvage and Bleu de Chanel are widely stocked examples. We have not established a current worldwide sales ranking for this guide. Test it on your own skin before you buy, because a bestseller can still smell wrong on you.
Should I buy eau de toilette or eau de parfum?
An eau de parfum contains more fragrance oil, roughly 15 to 20% compared with 5 to 15% for an eau de toilette, according to Wikipedia’s overview of perfume concentrations. An EDP may last longer, but concentration alone cannot predict performance. EDT and EDP versions can have different compositions; test the exact version you intend to buy.
How much should I spend on a men’s perfume?
For a first bottle, €25 to €60 is plenty: five of the best perfumes for men in this list can be found for under €50. Spend more once you know which scent family you enjoy.
Can men wear unisex or women’s perfumes?
Yes. The gender on the box is a marketing choice, and plenty of men wear vanilla, rose or fruity scents sold as unisex or women’s fragrances. If it smells good on your skin, wear it.
Our verdict
Which of the best perfumes for men should you buy first? It depends on your budget. On a tight one, Montblanc Legend is the safest everyday bottle and Club de Nuit Intense gives the most performance per euro. With €60 to spend, Montblanc Explorer is the all-rounder. If you want the classic designer experience, Bleu de Chanel is the one we would save for.
